PHP function fread

This function reads from an open file. It is a binary safe.

Syntax fread

  • file: a file handle
  • length: maximum number of bytes to read
fread(file, length);

Example 1

<?php

$file = 'myfile.txt';
$fh = fopen($file, "r");

$size = filesize($file);

$content = fread($fh, $size);
echo $content;

fclose($fh);
?>

Example 2: Read image

<?php

$filename = "myhome.png";
$fh = fopen($filename, "rb");
// send the right headers
header("Content-Type: image/png");
header("Content-Length: " . filesize($filename));

$contents = fread($fh, filesize($filename));
echo $contents;
fclose($fh);
?>
